Since 2012, the Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science (LA CaTS) Center has unified biomedical research institutions across the state, providing them with the critical resources needed to fight chronic diseases and address healthcare disparities. In August 2017, the National Institutes of Health awarded the center a $20 million federal grant. The funding will aid researchers in Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Shreveport in their work over the next five years.

"LA CaTS works as a big machine with lots of components and parts," said Vivian Fonseca, MD, Tulane University resource co-director for LA CaTS' Clinical Research Resources team. "The most successful component is the collaborative effort." More >>

Only a short walk up Canal Street from Tulane University School of Medicine's Murphy Building, scores of homeless individuals live in tents and sleeping bags underneath the interstate.

Their de facto encampment—also only a short walk from modern, new healthcare facilities—caught the attention of David Doukas, MD, who is new to New Orleans. Doukas, a family physician, arrived in the city in December to serve as the James A. Knight, MD Chair of Ethics and Humanities in Medicine in the School of Medicine. Within days on the job, he was faced with one of the city's pressing health and ethical crises. More >>

The art-filled "Walk to Welcome You"
In October the Tulane Medical Center Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit moved into its newly renovated, $3.8 million space. The expansion increased the space from seven beds to 16, but the major gain is the homey, accommodating atmosphere with modern amenities for the patients who stay there, as well as the staff.

Two BMT Unit employees led the project. Kristin Goff, clinical manager and nurse practitioner on the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and Alicia Dean, director of trauma services and interim director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program... More >>

Tulane alumna gives back to
annual White Coat Ceremony

Pamela Okada, MD,
(M '90) and her
daughter, Lauren
Okada Eng (M '21)
Pamela Okada, MD (M '90) and her husband, inspired by the support that Tulane showed to their family, have generously supported one of the most extraordinary experiences that Tulane provides for incoming medical students—the White Coat Ceremony.

"Tulane gave me the chance to be a doctor," she said. "So we feel that it's our job to provide those opportunities for other students to thrive."

This year, Okada and her husband had the remarkable experience of watching their own daughter, Lauren Okada Eng, a first-year medical student, cross the stage at the White Coat Ceremony. Eng’s grandparents on both sides flew in for the event, and the entire family proudly cheered her on as she followed in her mother’s footsteps. She read her note with a few private tears shared between her and her family. More >>
